Week 7

This cartoon is by a Chinese artist who chooses to stay anonymous, they go by the name of Crazy Crab. Crazy crab has a series based of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, in which they make political cartoons that criticize the Chinese government. This specific cartoon was done in 2013 around the time that current Chinese president Xi Jinping came into power. Xi Jinping called for “sharp criticism” of the CPC, by people outside of the party. Many people were very skeptical of the sincerity of Xi Jinping’s words, and few citizens reacted with hope. This cartoon depicts the Chinese government as the wolf who is disguised as a harmless, akin to how the Chinese government is asking for criticism but is hiding from the criticism with censorship.
